1. A sofa is not just for sitting!
No matter how cramped the house is, we still want a comfortable sofa to sit on and watch TV or receive guests. With a little planning, you can create your own chair models that combine storage cabinets or turn the chair legs into drawers for books, newspapers and other furniture. The coffee table can also become a small bookshelf.
2. Maximize space below the stairs.
Turn the space under the stairs into a place to store things, put cabinets or bookshelves… If you plan to store a lot of sundries, you should install doors for the closet to create a neater feeling. If you buy a house that already has an empty stairwell and doesn’t have too much money for repairs, you can optimize the space by making wooden or rattan boxes underneath. Even the stairs can become storage drawers, if you want.
3. Use tables and shelves with wheels.
The problem with a cramped house is that you don’t have much space to move things around when you need room for many people. Therefore, instead of buying heavy, fixed, commercially available tables, you should install tables and shelves with wheels yourself. Maybe adding wheels will make your table a little more expensive, but it will be extremely beneficial when you want to transform the space to suit your intended use.
4. The bedroom does not need to be large…
…but it needs to be convenient. When you only have a few square meters to make a bedroom, use bunk beds, or build a part of the loft to make a bed. The space below can become a working corner, a study corner, or a place to store clothes. You should also have curtains to maintain privacy when making a bed corner like that.
5. Optimize space with kitchen drawers.
The kitchen is always the place with the most clutter and at the same time the most unhygienic place in the house. Therefore, you should avoid installing too many shelves around the cooking area and avoid placing them all on the kitchen counter. Instead, you should take advantage of all the drawers under the kitchen counter to store pots, bowls, chopsticks, spices, and towels. Some triangular corners that are difficult to store can also be turned into convenient pull-out shelves.
6. Use baskets to store things
Instead of letting things pile up on top of shelves and desk drawers, you should sort them and put them in baskets. Currently, furniture suppliers have introduced many types of convenient baskets and compartmentalized containers, suitable for many furniture arrangement needs to optimize home space. Organizing things neatly helps you save time searching for things in a cramped house, and your room also looks neater and prettier.
7. Don’t waste walls.
Do you want an empty wall to hang pictures or a TV screen? Fine! However, when your house is not large, using those walls as a place to install bookshelves and rarely used dish cabinets is also extremely important. With just a little calculation, you can take advantage of the empty space around the picture or TV. If you don’t want the scene on the wall to be cluttered, add doors.
8. Install cabinets up to the ceiling.
Many people have the habit of building a moderately high cabinet, then placing suitcases and belongings on the roof. However, when your house is cramped, this arrangement will make the scene in the room more cluttered. Instead, you should make the cabinets all the way to the ceiling. When optimizing the internal division space, you should separate it into large and small compartments and different types of drawers for effective arrangement.
